Jurassic Park (2) - as if

영어소설을 읽는 목적은 영어로 된 표현을 익히는데 있을 것이다. 물론 국내 출판되지 않은 소설을 읽기 위해서일수도 있다.

소설속에서 많이 등장하는 표현중 하나가  as if 이다. 마치 ~인 것처럼, 흡사 ~와 같이 라는 주로 인물의 행동이나 상황을 묘사할 때 쓰인다.

Damn, he thought. At the river where? The river ran for miles through the island. He looked at his watch again. Seven minutes gone."You have a problem, Dennis," he said loud.
As if in reply, there was a soft hooting cry of an owl in the forest. 
Nedry hardly noticed; he was worrying about his plan. The plain fact was that time had run out. There wasn't a choice any more. He had to abandon his original plan.

제기랄, 도대체 강 어디쯤이야? 강은 몇 킬로미터에 걸쳐 섬 가운데를 흘러간다. 네드리는 다시 시계를 보았다. 7분이 지나 있었다.
"문제가 생긴거야, 데니스."
네드리는 자기 자신을 향해 큰 소리로 말했다.
그 소리에 화답이라도 하듯이, 숲에서 부엉이가 우는 부드러운 소리가 났다.
네드리는 그 소리를 그냥 지나쳤다. 자기 계획이 망쳐지는 것에 애태우고 있었기 때문에. 분명한 사실은 시간이 바닥이 났다는 것이다. 더 이상 선택의 여지가 없다. 처음 계획을 포기해야만 한다.

 

Tim groaned, and rolled onto his back, turning away from the puddle of vomit. The pain in his head made him breathe in short, shallow gasps. And he still felt sick, as if everything were moving. He opened his eyes and looked around, trying to get his bearings.

팀은 신음을 내뱉으며, 토한 것들이 웅덩이를 이룬 곳을 피해 뒤로 넘어졌다. 머리의 통증 때문에 짧고 얕게 숨을 쉬며 헐떡거렸다. 모든 것이 빙빙 도는 것처럼 아직도 욕지기가 치솟았다. 팀은 눈을 뜨고 주위를 돌아보며 자세를 잡으려고 애를 썼다.

 

He looked quickly at his watch: 5:00 a.m. Still almost six hours to go before the boat had to be recalled. He rolled onto his back, groaning. His head throbbed, and his body ached as if he had been beaten up. From around the corner, he heard a squeaking sound, like a rusty wheel. And then Lex giggling.

그랜트는 재빨리 시계를 보았다. 오전 5시였다. 배를 다시 부를 수 있는 여유 시간이 아직도 한 여섯 시간 남아 있었다. 그랜트는 신음을 하며 뒤로 굴렀다. 머리가 쑤셨다. 그리고 몸전체가 흠씬 얻어맞은 것처럼 아팠다. 구석 쪽에서 녹슨 바퀴가 돌아가는 것처럼 끽끽대는 소리가 났다. 이어 렉스가 깔깔거리는 소리가 들렸다.

 

"From now on, will you just do what I tell you?"
"Oh-kay," she sighed, as if he had just made the most unreasonable demand in the world. She trailed her arm in the water for a while.

"이제부터는 내가 하라는 대로 할 거니?"
"그럴 ... 게요."
렉스는 마치 그랜트가 세상에서 가장 부당한 요구라도 했다는 듯이 한숨을 쉬며 대답했다. 렉스는 잠시 동안 팔을 보트 바깥의 물 속에 집어넣고 있었다.

 

He almost missed the box to the left of the door. On opening it, he found a nine-button keypad, covered with spots of green mold. But it looked as if it was a way to open the door, and he had the feeling that on the other side of that door was a phone. Scratched in the metal of the box was the number 1023. He punched it in.

그랜트는 문 왼쪽에 있는 상자를 그냥 지나칠 뻔 했다. 그 상자를 열자 아홉 개의 단추로 되어 있는 숫자판이 나타났다. 숫자판 위에 곰팡이가 끼어 있었다. 하지만 분명 그것이 문을 여는 장치 같았다. 그랜트는 문 안쪽에는 틀림없이 전화가 있으리라는 느낌이 들었다. 상자의 뚜껑에는 1023 이라는 숫자가 긁혀져 있었다. 그랜트는 그 숫자를 두드렸다.

 

Wu stared out the lodge window at the raptors beyond fence. They still seemed playful, making mock attacks at Ellie. The behavior had continued for a long time now, and it occurred to him that it might be too long. It almost seemed as if they were trying to keep Ellie's attention, in the same way that she was trying to keep theirs.

우는 로지의 창문으로 담장 너머의 랩터들을 바라보고 있었다. 아직도 장난스럽게 엘리를 향해 공격하는 시늉을 하고 있었다. 그 행동은 아주 오랫동안 계속되고 있었다. 우는 그것이 지나치게 길다고 생각했다. 마치 그놈들은 엘리의 주의를 계속 묶어두고 있는 것처럼 보였다. 엘리가 그놈들의 주의를 묶어 두려는 것과 똑같은 방식으로.

Now she was at the level of the rooptop, she could see the gravel only four feet away, and the glass pyramids of the skylights, sticking up in the mist. There was a door on the roof; she could get inside. In a single heaving effort she flung herself through the air, and landed sprawling on the gravel. She scraped her, but somehow the only sensation was exhilaration, as if it were a kind of game she was playing, a game she intended to win.

엘리는 나무 꼭대기에 이르렀다. 바로 1미터 정도 떨어진 곳에 평평한 지붕에 깐 자갈들이 보였다. 그리고 안개를 찌르며 치솟은 피라미드 모양의 지붕 창문 유리가 보였다. 지붕에는 문이 있었다. 그 안으로 들어가면 그만이었다. 망설임 없이 몸을 휙 내던졌다. 몸이 공중을 날았다. 엘리는 자갈 위에 두 발로 펄쩍 뛰어 내렸다. 얼굴이 가지에 긁혔다. 그러나 유쾌함만을 느낄 수 있을 뿐이었다. 마치 일종의 게임을 하고 있는 것 같았다. 이기고 싶은 게임을.

'마치 ~ 인것 같았다.'라는 표현은 소설을 읽으면서 흔하게 볼 수 있는 것이지만, as if 는 나올때마다 무슨 뜻인지 긴장하면서 생각을 하려고 노력하게 된다. 영어소설을 읽는 재미는 이런 표현들을 내용과 함께 자연스럽게 받아들일 수 있다는 점이다.
